The Giving Myths: Giving, then Getting the Life You’ve Always Wanted ($16.49) (Add $3 for S&H in US)

The Giving Myths

There are many giving myths and Steve addresses them in The Giving Myths.

The first of the giving myths, and the one that is likely the most broadly shared, is the myth of the American Dream. Which, accurately understood, goes something like this: “Get all you can, Save all you can, Achieve all you can.” And, if you do, the reward is, you'll be happy, healthy and spend your blissful retirement years in peace and tranquility.

There is only problem with this popular and often repeated notion: It's a myth.  The life you really want is a gift itself. You receive it and, as you do, you give it away. You cannot give what you do not possess. But what you possess and do give away, you get to keep and enjoy. The life you want isn't achieved; it is received. The life you want isn't kept; it's given away. What Jesus said about giving is a complete reversal of expectations.

What people really want is found not in getting but giving. Generous giving in life and living is the key to finding and living the life you've always wanted.

The American Dream, however, is not only a myth as it is typically understood but there are many other myths about giving...about living a life a generosity. Steve addresses several of these giving myths throughout the book.

The Giving Myths

The Giving Myths

In The Giving Myths, Dr. Steve McSwain makes a compelling argument that your highest purpose is to pursue a life of generosity...generous giving...that is to say, to give yourself away and share your abundance with the world.

The Giving Myths, when identified and transcended, gives way to the life you've always wanted. Generosity in giving and living is a learned lifestyle. But it is the secret to truly living. It does not come naturally for most people, however. It must therefore be cultivated. When the spirit of generosity is the gift you have, you are free to give and to share your life and compassion and resources with the world. This is the way to self-actualization and personal fulfillment.

Contrary to popular culture, the life you've always wanted isn't found in your career choice, your personal achievements, or even the amount of money you make in a lifetime. While all of these pursuits are important, none is more important than the pursuit of "the abundant life," as Jesus called it. Abundance, however, could not refer to "stuff" to material. Otherwise, Jesus himself never experienced that kind of abundance himself. He owned nothing, as far as we know, saying he had no place "to lay his head" (Luke 9:58).

The Giving Myths reveals the fallacious things people believe about giving and how these mythical beliefs interrupt their journey toward genuine happiness and life fulfillment.

Dr. McSwain's book on The Giving Myths - the only book on generosity endorsed by virtually every major Christian denomination in America.
